Editorial Policy

PetCoverToday exists to help pet owners understand pet insurance well enough to make their own informed decision, not to sell a particular policy or steer owners toward any single provider.

This page explains how our content is produced, who is responsible for it, and the standards every article is held to before it is published.

Our Mission

Pet insurance policies are dense, and the difference between providers often comes down to details buried in a sample policy document: how an annual limit resets, what counts as a pre-existing condition, or how long a waiting period runs for a specific condition.

Our goal is to translate that detail into plain language, backed by real data, so an owner can compare options with a clearer picture of what each one truly covers.

Who Writes and Edits Our Content

Content on PetCoverToday is led by Sarah Mitchell, our Editor in Chief and lead writer, who sets the Site’s research standards, sourcing requirements, and editorial voice.

Sarah works with a small editorial team responsible for fact-checking cost figures, cross-referencing policy terms against providers’ own documents, and reviewing each article before it is published.

Every byline on this Site reflects that same editorial process, not a single writer working alone.

Our Research Process

Before an article is written, we research the topic using primary sources: insurers’ own policy documents and official websites, government and industry data where available, and peer-reviewed veterinary literature for breed- and condition-specific health information.

We prioritize organizations such as the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), veterinary teaching hospitals, and established veterinary journals over secondary summaries.

Where a figure is genuinely contested or varies across sources, such as a disease’s reported prevalence in a specific breed, we say so rather than presenting a single number as settled fact.

Fact-Checking Standards

Every statistic, cost range, and policy claim in a published article is checked against a named, linkable source at the time of writing. Cost figures are built from real provider rate data, published claims examples, or documented case studies rather than estimated.

When a provider’s policy terms are described in detail, such as a waiting period or an exclusion, we verify that description against the provider’s own current policy documentation rather than relying on an older article, including our own.

Editorial Independence

PetCoverToday does not accept payment from insurance providers in exchange for coverage, placement, or favorable treatment in any article. We currently have no affiliate, referral, or commission relationship with any pet insurance company named on this Site.

The Site is intended to be supported by display advertising through Google AdSense. If and when that advertising is active, it has no bearing on which providers we write about or how we describe them. If a paid or affiliate relationship is added in the future, it will be disclosed clearly on the pages it affects.

How We Keep Articles Current

Pet insurance pricing, provider policies, and underwriting rules change over time. Published articles carry an “Updated” date, and we periodically revisit older articles to confirm that provider terms, cost ranges, and cited data still hold up, correcting or retiring claims that no longer do.

Corrections Policy

We make mistakes like any publication, and we would rather fix one quickly than leave it standing.

If you believe something on this Site is inaccurate or out of date, including a cost figure, a policy detail, or a cited source, let us know through our Contact page with as much detail as you can provide. We review every report and correct confirmed errors as soon as possible.
